Cycle time, machine time and walking

Manual work, machine-running time and walking behave differently in a balance, so they are measured separately. Machine automatic time can overlap with the operator's next element; walking cannot. Keeping them distinct is what makes the later combination sheet correct.

Standards that survive scrutiny

Because each element traces back to a moment in the recording, a standard time can be reviewed by a supervisor, a union representative or a customer auditor without repeating the study.

Feeding manning and costing

Measured, levelled work content converts into required manning per shift and the labour cost that goes with it, so a proposed change can be argued in money as well as seconds.
